first_imgWe live in a loud world. Car engines, cellphones, pop music piped through grocery-store speakers — it can seem impossible to escape all the noise. Silence is a luxury. But a new shape discovered by researchers at Boston University could help bring peace and quiet to our lives. Well, at least some quiet.Called an “acoustic metamaterial,” the shape was developed based on a mathematically modeled design that enables it to cancel up to 94 percent of sound by reflecting certain frequencies back to their source.“Acoustics is a very old field of research with a very rich history,” Reza Ghaffarivardavagh, a BU mechanical engineer who worked on the project, told Digital Trends. “The advent of new fabrication technologies and advancement in computational tools have helped us better understand and utilize the interaction of acoustic waves with complicated solid objects.”Most sound barriers today include thick walls and acoustic panels. These techniques are effective, but they can be large, unwieldy, and aren’t fit for situations that require uninterrupted airflow. That is why Ghaffarivardavagh and mechanical engineer Xin Zhang began to look for a technology that would preserve the passage of air but still block sound. Using mathematical modeling and 3D printing, they developed the acoustic metamaterial, which is capable of catching and reflecting the tiny disturbances in the air that cause sound. Typical acoustic panels capture sound rather than reflect sound like the acoustic metamaterial. To test their invention, the researchers put a loudspeaker into one end of a large PVC pipe and placed the acoustic metamaterial at the other end. The metamaterial effectively silenced 94 percent of the loudspeakers sound — or, enough to make it practically imperceptible to the human ear.The acoustic metamaterial may find uses in quieting things like HVAC units and drone turbines. “Our design is extremely open, cheap to fabricate, and lightweight,” Ghaffarivardavagh said. “I believe there are great opportunities for its application, such as decreasing noise from fans. Our silencer’s performance is a narrow band but we are working on the wider-band design along with a tunable model, which may open up new possibilities.”A paper detailing the project was published this week in the journal Physical Review. first_imgTell me who your friends are and I’ll tell you who you are, as the saying goes. Google has apparently taken that age-old adage to heart in trying to protect users from less than conscientious Android apps. Such apps might use permissions and data more than they should, at least compared to other similar apps that behave properly. And while the reasoning behind such peer grouping, Google unsurprisingly injects a pinch of machine learning to make it a less overwhelming task. Whereas Apple reviews each and every app that goes into its app store, Google automates the process and relies on machine learning instead. While more efficient, some malicious apps do end up slipping through the cracks. That’s especially true for apps that really do look and behave innocently. Save for the fact that they might be getting your location or using data when they don’t have any business to.To identify such crafty apps, Google resorts to peer group analysis. In a nutshell, it compares each app with other apps like it to see if it is doing anything out of the ordinary. If most coloring apps don’t use location permissions, an app that tries to get permission to read the GPS is going to raise red flags. Users are usually asked to approve or deny permissions, but they don’t usually know why an app would need such. It’s definitely more effective to cut the app off before it can even be installed. But comparing every app against its peer is more work than what’s possible for humans. In fact, even just grouping them can be tedious enough. Sure, you can group them by the general categories you can find them in, like games, productivity, social, etc. But those are too broad and too massive to be usable in this context. This is where that oh so useful machine learning comes in. Google analyzes and groups apps based on a variety of vectors, including app metadata, the app’s text description, and even user installs.Such an automated peer grouping and peer group analysis system is definitely a smart way of dealing with a gargantuan task in the most efficient way possible, something Google has traditionally been good at. However, it hasn’t exactly been good at keeping such intrusive or even downright malicious apps at bay. Hopefully the wealth of data and machine learning improvements will help improve the situation. At least before some big, crippling bug hits Android users hard.SOURCE: Googlelast_img read more

first_imgCalled the Kodak Printomatic Instant Print Camera, this model isn’t dissimilar from competing models on the market, though it does have a larger full-camera size. As with competing products, Kodak has elected to use ZINK printing technology rather than actual instant film. This is a deal-breaker for some; for all of ZINK’s upsides, the quality leaves some wanting more.ZINK aside, the Printomatic combines instant printing with digital functionality; it is capable of capturing 10-megapixel images. There’s a microSD card slot, two integrated picture modes, a battery indicator, flash, and overall simplified designed. The integrated battery is rechargeable.Images measure 2 x 3-inches, which is decent enough — the camera includes a 10-pack of this Photo Paper, though refill Photo Paper packs can be had in quantities as high as 50 (for $20 USD). The camera itself is relatively budget-tier with a $70 price tag, and it is offered in both yellow and grey colors. Love them or hate them, instant cameras are back and now Kodak has gotten into the mix. These cameras are, like Polaroid models from days gone by, models that print instant photos. These images aren’t very big and they aren’t the best quality, but they’re a fun way to make stickers, fill out a scrapbook, or entertain the kids.last_img read more

first_imgWay back in 2014, Samsung announced a somewhat unexpected tablet. While rugged tablets weren’t exactly rare even back then, a rugged tablet in 8-inch size and a “ C Pen” stylus definitely was. That was the Galaxy Tab Active, pictured above, which was pretty much a mid-range affair. Despite the tablet market regarded to be in a slump, Samsung is surprising us again with a successor to the 2014 slab, which keeps the size and the screen but bumps up what’s inside. Meet the soon to be Galaxy Tab Active 2. Some might joke that Samsung’s tablets outside the Tab S line are pretty rugged because of their plastic bodies and mediocre specs. But if the Galaxy Tab Active from three years ago is anything to go by, those have nothing on the Active model’s bumpers. But unlike the Galaxy S8 Active, the Galaxy Tab Active 2 isn’t taking after this year’s top of the line smartphones and remains squarely in the mid-range line.According to the specs spotted at GFXbench, the Galaxy Tab Active 2 will run on a Samsung Exynos 7870, a 1.5 GHz quad-core processor. It will have 3 GB of RAM but, disappointingly, only 16 GB of storage. Since taking photos with tablets isn’t exactly a common thing, there will probably be no tears shed over this tablet’s measly 8 megapixel rear camera and 5 megapixel front camera. Those are the things that have changed between generations. What has remained, for better or worse, is the 8-inch screen with a WXGA resolution. That means 1280×800 pixels only. That implies the tablet will retain the same dimensions as its predecessor. Sadly that seems to be confirmed by an FCC document that lists the same 4,450 mAh battery inside.Considering there has been little prior rumor about this Galaxy Tab Active 2, a lot of questions remain unanswered. Like, will it have the same capacitive C Pen as the first tablet? Or perhaps more importantly, does Samsung believe there’s still a market for such a smaller rugged tablet when tablets in general seem to be on a decline.VIA: WinFuturelast_img read more

first_imgOnce you’ve got all that data downloaded, you can delete your Facebook from that same set of settings. Hit the carrot, press the explode button. Start communicating with your friends and family with a phone call, go write a letter, meet for a movie this weekend at the theater. Or if you prefer baby steps, switch to texting only. Or use a disappearing social network like Snapchat. Whatever brings us all back to reality – I’m all for it. Have a peek at Apple to combat phone addiction (for kids) for more reading on how mobile devices (with social networking apps, especially) are destroying our modern world. Facebook “active users” in North America dropped this past quarter for the first time in the history of the social network. Facebook peaked, and it’s time to short your usage. That’s not financial advice, it’s an “all clear” signal from me to you. Download all your old Facebook posts and photos if you must, but please feel free to set your Facebook page for self-destruct, any time! Yesterday I started a series of articles about the big blue social network with a post called We need a new Facebook. It is my opinion that Facebook is not what it used to be – not by a long shot. Instead, I believe that Facebook has become a cesspool of degenerate content, shared by necessity, liked and re-shared by default. Instead of a place to hang out with friends, Facebook is a true drag. But Facebook is not invincible, and Facebook is not necessarily forever. No company is – nor is any one country. Even our planet Earth is going to get consumed by our exploding Sun one day. As Facebook itself reports, users are on their way out.Above you’ll see a chart created with data from Facebook’s Q4 2017 earnings report made into a bar graph with DataWrapper. This is a chart showing millions of daily active users, specifically. That’s an average, whereas the monthly active users number continues to grow relatively steadily.Research released this week by Honest Data, Inc. suggested that 1 out of every 4 Americans believe Facebook is “having a negative impact on society.” The sample size here isn’t massive, but it’s big enough to get a rough estimate. Honest Data assures us that “demographic weights” are used to “ensure a representative sample.” You’ll notice that Marlboro is the only cigarette company on the list in the first sample, so it’s kind of difficult to put any of these other companies ahead. When the study asks about a negative impact on society with a list of only tech companies, Facebook is the clear winner. It’s followed relatively closely behind by Twitter – another massive social network.I have important stuff on Facebook! You can download all of that stuff, all at once!
